What Makes Him God? Understanding the God of the Bible

Do you know what makes Him God? We believe He is God and worship Him as so. But do we know what makes Him God?

What sets the God of the Bible apart that we have chosen to place our faith and worship in Him?

This is an important question because our faith is not blind—it is built upon truth, and truth must be understood.

Why should we know what makes Him God?

This world is all about man knowing himself and living one’s truth. But the created must realise that purpose and satisfaction won’t come just by knowing the self.

That comes by knowing one’s Creator, knowing why we were created, and staying connected to the One who powers and sustains our existence. A machine cannot understand itself unless it first knows the intention of its Maker. In the same way, we can only discover the meaning of life by looking to the God who designed life itself.

John 17:3 tells us that in knowing God is life, not just for now, but for eternity. "And' this is life eternal, that they might know You the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent."

How do we know what makes Him God?

We know what makes Him God through the Bible
Scriptures are written so we may know Him. And if you want to deepen your understanding of Him, you must open the pages and read through.

Most of our discovery of the nature and person of our God will happen when we become a student of the Word. They are not just a record of history but a living testimony of who God is. The more we study Scripture, the clearer our understanding of His nature, His character, and His works becomes.

We know what makes Him God through our relationship with Jesus.

It is amazing to think that man is not able to behold God in all His glory, power, and perfection and live to tell the tale.

No man can see the form of God and survive. Ex. 33:20."But, he said [to Moses], “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”

Hence, Jesus, God's Son, came from heaven to reveal the Father, God, to us. John 1:18 says, “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”

Jesus is all-God who became flesh, that we may know Him and His power. (John 14:6ff, Philippians 3). Unending life is ours for the taking. Life without end. Limitless life. And it is found in Jesus. He bridges the gap between God and man so that we can know the God who is otherwise too great to comprehend.

What makes Him God?

He is God because he has personality
Man has a personality only because God, his Creator, has one.

Unlike gods or inanimate objects, God knows, thinks, feels, behaves and responds. Our God is an individual that is living and has definite characteristics. He is not a distant energy, but a personal Being who speaks, listens, and relates to His people.

He is God because of His nature
He is a person. He is alive. He is not just an influence or unseen force or power like electricity. Jer. 10:10, "But the Lord is the true God, He is the living God."

He is mobile and He is not distant. God is not stuck in one place. He is active. II Chron. 16:9, " For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”

His involvement in creation is continuous—He does not withdraw from His work but sustains it daily with His power and presence.

He is God because He is eternal and uncreated.
He didn’t begin. He never came to be. He was always IS and He will never cease to be. Psalm 90:2, "From everlasting to everlasting, You are God."

He is God because he wasn’t created. Else, His creator would be the true God. We don’t know how long He has been existing. He has just always been there. He exists beyond human timelines and boundaries, untouched by decay or limitation.

He is God because He is indestructible and immortal.
Even when God took human form, physical death couldn’t destroy the Lord Jesus. I Tim. 1:17; 6:16.

The cross was not the end. His immortality secures our hope that death has no final power over those who belong to Him.

He is God because He is self-sustaining.
He is fully independent. He does not need a power source, He is the source of power. He does not need nurturing or tending. Unlike all creation that depends on Him, He depends on nothing. He is the great “I AM” who exists by His own being.

He is supreme and superior.
God must be a force and a person no one can reckon with. Nothing can stand His nature nor withstand His will. Heb. 12 :29 even describes Him as an all-consuming fire. His supremacy places Him above all creation, all powers, and all authorities.

He is God because He is all power
God has power to create, invent, destroy, and recreate. God creates out of thought and out of words. He wills all things into being.

God doesn’t need raw materials as men do. Man makes things out of existing materials. God creates what has never before existed. And He creates out of nothing. Job 42:2, "I know that You can do everything."

He is God because He is ever-present and ever-seeing.
He is 100 percent there, everywhere. He fills all. He is in all. Col 3:11.

He is in my past as He is in my present and future. All are equally seen by Him, understood and sorted out.

Psa. 139:7-9, "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”

Jer. 23 :23, " “Am I only a God nearby, declares the Lord, and not a God far away?”

This means there is no hidden place, no forgotten moment, and no unreachable future for Him. His presence is absolute and His vision is complete.

He is God because He is all-knowing
He is never unaware. There is nothing he doesn’t know or see right now.

Hebrews 4:13 “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

I Chron. 28 :9, "The Lord searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts."

Job 42 :2, "No thought can be withheld from You."

His knowledge is not only vast but also personal—He knows our thoughts, desires, and even the intentions of our hearts before we speak them.

He is God because He is not human.
He does not have the flawed characteristics of man. He cannot sin. He is never indecisive nor fickle. There is nothing inferior, lacking, or flawed in Him.

God is perfectly moral and righteous. He is holy. God is consistently loving. God is never unfair yet always merciful. He knows how to balance forgiveness and accountability, and mercy and justice.

I Sam. 15 :29, "He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

Jas. 1 :17, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

His holiness and moral perfection set Him apart from every other being. His justice is never tainted, and His mercy is never compromised.

He is God because He is unique and distinguished.
There is none like Him-Ex. 9 :14; Deut. 33 :26. Else, He will be just somebody else.

He is God because He is immutable.
He will never change, degrade, improve, or be corrupted. He is in His perfect state. He is pure and unaltered. He is unalterable. Mal. 3 :6, "For I am the Lord, I change not."

Like oil, He can never blend with anything else. He will remain Himself. Perfect. Pure. Matt. 5 :48. Rom. 1:23.

Because of His immutability, we can trust His promises fully. What He has declared will always remain true, and His character is forever reliable.

Prayer for the Day

Lord, help me appreciate the person and nature of you. Help me reflect and be in awe of the magnificence, complexity, yet simplicity of You.

Container Gardening: Planting KangKong in Pots (Water Spinach)

Kang kong is a well-known leafy vegetable used in many Philippine dishes. It is quite easy to grow they say. There was a time when you can find kangkong patches on most streets in the neighborhood. It is also called water spinach or swamp cabbage. It thrives in wet, moist areas. Many grow it solely in water. It quickly grows under sunny spots but carers should keep the soil moist. Else, it may die. Some tips: Not much intstructions on planting. Just bury the seed and keep the soil moist or muddy.  Kangkong grows all year round. Cut maybe an inch or two above the soil for continued regrowth and harvesting. Winter may see your plant dying but often, it regrows by spring. You may fertilize with nitrogen twice a month. You may harvest whole plants at about 1 to 2 months. Kangkong has the tendency to spread. Grow in a container for easy maintenance or harvest whole plants to control your supply. It is best to use potting soil for your containers. Putting regular soil in res...

Why Am I Sleepy During the Day?

What's causing your eyes and brain to shut down during the day? Why can't you keep your eyes open just when you really need to get some work or reading done? If you’ve been asking yourself, “ Why am I sleepy during the day ?” or struggling with that mid-morning or afternoon crash, you’re not alone. Millions of people deal with daytime sleepiness that makes it hard to focus, stay productive, or even enjoy daily activities. The good news? Most causes are simple and fixable once you know what’s behind that drowsy feeling. Too Many Carbs – A Common Cause of Daytime Fatigue If you're not careful, you can over-consume carbohydrates. And when you're taking in more carbohydrates than you can burn, you will get sleepy. Dr. Libby says it's either because your insulin levels are high or you might be gluten intolerant. Choose Gratitude!

Gratitude  is how you deal with worry and anxiety.  A grateful heart  helps you get over yourself. As Christians, we are called to practice gratitude every moment, not just when life is going smoothly but especially in the hard moments. Gratitude anchors our hearts to God’s faithfulness and reminds us that we are never alone. Gratitude Helps Us See Beyond Ourselves Somewhere in the world, in this very moment, someone is dying without Jesus. Someone is living it tough. They’re without hope, unaware that God is nearby, ready to save. As followers of Christ, cultivating a heart of gratitude keeps us sensitive to these realities, pushing us to pray, share the Gospel, and love others intentionally. It also moves us to keep appreciating our salvation and security in Christ, now and whatever happens in the future. People are out there, wrestling with the purpose of life. They have never known the presence and loving touch of the One True God. They have yet to experience a r...
