You never know when you’ll get another chance to speak with someone about Christ, so prayerfully make sure you share the Gospel message rightly, truthfully, and simply. Here are the essentials you need to cover.
God’s Love for Everyone
The Bible says that God loves the world—He loves everyone. His love is for each one of His creation, and He longs to be in fellowship with us. (John 3:16)
Our Sin Problem
But we all have a sin problem.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Sin separates us from God’s love and access to Him. Because God is perfect and holy, He cannot fellowship where there is sin. Where there is sin, there will be a life without God and an eternity apart from Him.
Since heaven is where God dwells, the Bible calls that eternal separation hell—and it is real.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
We Need Jesus
We are helpless, born with a sin nature, and we cannot save ourselves.
But in His mercy and love, God made a way for us to be reconciled to Him. He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins—once for all. He took our place and paid the penalty we owed.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Action Step: Trust and Change Your Mind
What we need to do is put our faith in the finished work and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)
Repentance means changing your mind—acknowledging that you need saving and that only Christ can save you. Stop trying to earn your way to heaven and put your full trust, faith, and reliance on Christ’s redemptive work on the Cross.
What to Say When Sharing the Gospel
You could say something like:
“God loves you and wants a relationship with you. But the Bible says that all of us have sinned and fallen short, and that the result of sin is death—eternal separation from God. We are helpless and cannot save ourselves. But in His mercy and love, God sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins, in our place, and save us from an eternity without Him in hell. The Bible says salvation is a gift—received by putting your full trust, faith, and reliance in who Jesus is and what He’s already done on the cross for you. If you’re ready to stop trying to earn your way to heaven and simply trust in Him, tell Him that right now and accept God’s free gift of salvation through Jesus’ sacrifice.”
How to Share the Gospel Through Prayer
Sometimes it’s easier to gently share the Gospel by offering to pray for someone. A simple prayer can open the door without pressure.
You could say:
“Would it be okay if I pray for you for a moment?”
Then pray something like:
God,
I thank You for the chance to pray for [name]. May Your love, guidance, and blessing be upon them. Your Word says that even though we sin and fall short, You love us so much that You sent Your Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to save us from a life eternally doomed and separated from You. What we need to do is stop trusting in what we can do and instead put our full faith and trust in the finished and atoning sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Thank You for the sure promise that the moment we do, we enter into a permanent relationship with You—secure in this life and for eternity in heaven—because You have said that no one can take Your child out of Your hand and that Your love remains for Your children, even when we fail.
Leave Them With an Assurance
It’s helpful to provide scriptures they can reflect on later—verses that point to our need for a Savior, salvation through Christ, and security in Him.
You could even hand them a simple Scripture card they can keep, like this one you can print and share.
